A large number of today's black women have a misconception about the availability of good black men. This topic is discussed in magazine articles, television, and forums across the country on a daily basis. The perception is that most black men are dead, in jail, or gay. Even though statistics may support a higher percentage of these occurrences than in the past, most of these statistics are overblown. These negative perceptions are mostly excuses from black woman that have failed to successfully find a mate. A large number of black women are looking trophy husbands rather than soul mates.

The statistics which state that a large percentages of black men are dead, in jail or gay are misleading. This negativity is projected by images in magazines, books, and television. Sadly, black publications and writers glorify these images perceptions. Individuals are drawn to drama, so books like "On the Down Low" tends to sell millions of copies. The best selling black novels usually contain images of homosexuality, cheating, lying, and scandals.

Black women are their own enemies in contributing to the perceived lack of available black men. Chasing players, thugs, and status greatly lowers their chances of finding an available mate. Many women take the chance of competing for that smaller percentage of trophy men. In many cases potential soulmates and breadwinners go unnoticed. This is mainly because most black women enjoy flashiness in a man.
Every woman should have standards when choosing a mate. Being selective but realistic is very important when searching for a mate. Black women should understand that there are consequences to every choice you make in a mate. If you decide to hold out for the trophy man then you have to deal with the consequences of choosing from a smaller pool. If your goals are unrealistic, the more difficult it will be to find a man. When these women don't have what it takes to attract and keep these trophy men they become frustrated. Black men in general are blamed instead of the woman in the mirror. There is not a shortage of good black men. There is shortage of women that know what qualities are important in a mate.
